We can isolate thousands of unique genomic DNA samples from our actinomycete culture collection. The full value of the microbial collection will be realized by applying synthetic biology approaches. Current technology makes it possible to map out the entire genetic potential of culturable and nonculturable microbes by sequencing genomic DNA and analyzing that information for known natural product gene clusters using searching algorithms. In this way one can access new molecules and new members of a known natural product classes. Not all genes are active in their native state, but once the cluster is identified, it is possible to turn on nascent pathways to express the new natural product.
